Managed Medicaid Market Leaders: A Mid-Year Update

• Centene continues to lead the Managed Medicaid market with nearly 12.3 million members at the end of 2Q24, down by over 177,000 since 1Q24, or about 1.4%. Centene is down 16.7% since 2Q23, representing a year-over-year loss of nearly 2.5 million enrollees.
• Compared to last quarter, Elevance’s 2Q24 Medicaid membership fell by 3.7%, or about 287,000 members. The company’s membership has dropped by over 2.2 million people (23.2%) since June 30, 2023.
• UnitedHealth lost 230,000 covered lives (4%) during 2Q24; they are down over 971,000 since 2Q23, or about -15.1%, based on NAIC filings.
• Molina’s mid-year (2Q24) enrollment stood at nearly 4.2 million, a decrease of 6.9% from 2Q23.
• In 2Q24, Independence Blue Cross (IBX) saw a quarterly drop in Medicaid enrollment of 3.4%, or about 84,000 members. IBX has seen a year-over-year decline in Medicaid enrollment of 315,000, about -11.8%.
• The total Managed Medicaid market declined 2.1% between March 31, 2024 (1Q24) and June 30, 2024 (2Q24) and -13.1% between June 30, 2023 (2Q23) and 2Q24. As of 2Q24, Managed Medicaid enrollment was 79.6 million.
